Modern life is packed with kids, jobs, extracurricular activities, family and so many other obligations. It can feel impossible to balance everything that presents itself each day, let alone find time to spend with God. Every self-help manual, magazine, book, and tv show impresses the need to find time for “self-care,” to recharge and restore depleted energy reserves. What all of these resources fail to realize, though, is that time spent pursuing God’s will and seeking his face is the ultimate “self-care.”
In Isaiah, the scripture says: “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” (Isa 40:31). Waiting on God guarantees renewal the way a cup of tea, or a bubble bath, or a shopping spree can’t. God is able to refresh us through his word when the suffering and pressure of this world have attempted to sap our strength.
God’s spirit is the source of love, strength, and resilience in the shadow of adversity. In Galatians, we are reminded that “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance.” (Gal 5:22) These things don’t come from within us; they come from God. If we want to exhibit these virtues in our lives, we must prioritize our relationship with God. Only by setting aside the time to spend with God by receiving the holy word and building a relationship through prayer can we have the strength to face life with the freedom God designed us to have. Jesus promised that those who seek him would be renewed: “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:38)
